Genealogy Class Information
Desert
Fjord Lodge offers a class in genealogy on a regular basis. The article below
describes content typically covered in this class. Watch this space for
announcements of upcoming classes.
On
Saturday, 25 February, Desert Fjord will continue the tradition of an annual Genealogy
Class. The class will provide a
foundation for understanding how to look for your Norwegian ancestors.
It will also serve as a refresher and update for those who are in the
process of filling in some of the empty spaces in their family tree.
This
unique class, aimed at our Norwegian heritage, will help you look for those lost
names and vital records in
Norway
and the
United States
. We will give you a perspective on the information available in both the
US
and
Norway
. We cover the history and geography
of
Norway
, census, immigration, naturalization, churches, cemeteries, newspaper
obituaries, and internet sources.
A
major feature of this class is that you will be joined by Desert Fjord members
who will share with you what they have already found: the homesteads of their
immigrant ancestors on the prairies of the Great Plains as well as the family
farms in
Norway
. Some have located their living
relatives. Genealogy is not just a hobby; it is a wondrous personal journey
through time and history.
The
class will be from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, 25 February.
It will be held at the Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E Via Linda, just
off of
Shea Blvd
in
Scottsdale
. To help defray costs for the room and extensive handouts, the cost is $10 for
Sons of Norway members and $15 for non-members. The class is limited to 32
people. You can reserve a space by
leaving your name and phone number on our lodge phone (480-422-4334) or call
Ross Berg (480-767-3359) for the agenda and additional details.
